Why 100 KB is the limit you meet most often
A hundred kilobytes has become the default upload cap across an enormous range of systems: job portals, university applications, marketplace listings, forum avatars, content management systems and email attachment guidelines. It is a round number that predates fast mobile connections, and it stuck because it is genuinely reasonable — comfortably small to store and transmit, comfortably large to hold a photograph that still looks good.
Compared with the tighter brackets, 100 KB is a relief. A photograph around 1000 × 1300 pixels fits with quality to spare, which is more resolution than most forms will ever display. In practice you will often find that quality reduction alone reaches the target and your original dimensions survive untouched.
Content matters as much as size
Two images with the same pixel dimensions can need very different treatment to fit the same 100 KB, and the difference is entirely in the subject. Photographs with large smooth regions — a face against a plain wall, a document scan, a product on white — compress efficiently and keep most of their resolution. Photographs full of fine detail — grass, gravel, foliage, crowds, patterned fabric, screenshots of dense text — force the encoder to spend bytes everywhere.
If a busy image will not fit gracefully, the productive move is to reduce what the encoder has to describe. Crop away background that is not carrying meaning. If the image is destined for a small display slot in a form, resize it down deliberately rather than letting quality absorb the entire reduction.

A rental application wants payslips and an identity document; a job portal wants a photograph and scanned certificates; a listing wants eight product photos, each under the cap.
