Pixels, display size and print size are three different things
An image has exactly one real measurement: how many pixels wide and tall it is. Everything else depends on context. The same 1200-pixel-wide photograph fills a phone screen, occupies a column on a laptop, and prints at four inches wide at photo quality or at twelve inches at poster quality that you would not want to look at closely. "Big" and "small" are not properties of the file.
This is why upload forms specify pixels while print shops specify inches and a DPI figure. When a requirement is given in centimetres, multiply by the DPI to get the pixels you actually need: a 10 × 15 cm print at 300 DPI works out at roughly 1200 × 1800 pixels.
Aspect ratio, and why images get squashed
Changing width and height independently distorts the picture — faces stretch, circles become ovals, and everyone notices even when they cannot say why. Keeping the proportions locked and setting only one dimension avoids this entirely; the other follows automatically.
When a destination demands an exact ratio your image does not have — a square profile picture from a portrait photograph, say — resizing is the wrong tool for the job. Crop first to establish the shape you need, then resize the cropped result to the required pixel dimensions. Doing it in that order gives you control over what gets cut, instead of letting the platform choose for you.
Making an image larger
Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured. Software can only interpolate — invent plausible intermediate pixels from the ones around them — which produces a larger but softer image, and beyond about double the original size the softness becomes obvious.
Where enlargement does make sense is meeting a stated minimum. If a form demands at least 600 pixels and your image is 500, upscaling gets it accepted and the small quality cost is irrelevant. What it will not do is rescue a low-resolution photograph for printing, no matter how large you make the numbers.
Good to know
Downscaling is done in steps rather than in one jump, which keeps edges sharp — a single-pass resize is what produces the soft, aliased look you get from naive tools. Upscaling is a different matter: no amount of processing can invent detail that was never captured, so enlarging beyond the original will always look soft.
With the aspect ratio locked, changing one dimension adjusts the other automatically so nothing is distorted. Unlocking it lets you force exact width and height, which is occasionally required by forms that specify precise pixel dimensions.
In a batch, the same width is applied to every file while each keeps its own proportions — useful for generating thumbnails or a gallery from photos that are not all the same shape. The output format matches the input, so PNG transparency survives.

DPI only matters for printing. For screens, only the pixel dimensions count. For print, 300 DPI is the standard for photographs and 150 is acceptable for posters viewed from a distance.
