A budget where you barely compromise

One megabyte is a comfortable ceiling rather than a constraint. A full-resolution photograph from a modern phone — twelve megapixels, often four or five megabytes straight out of the camera — fits inside 1 MB at a quality level most people cannot distinguish from the original without pixel-peeping side by side.

That is because phone cameras write files conservatively, at quality settings well above what the image needs. Most of the reduction here comes from re-encoding sensibly rather than from discarding anything you would miss. PNG files are the other common case. PNG is lossless and cannot discard detail to save space, so a photographic PNG may barely shrink at all. Converting it to JPEG or WebP first will usually drop it under a megabyte immediately — as long as the destination accepts those formats and the image does not need transparency.
